Things You Should Already Have:
Magic Robe. For aspirants to the A∴A∴, use your normal robe.. For members of O.T.O., use your Man of Earth regalia. If you are a Minerval or under, your EGC Baptism and Confirmation robe would work fine as well. All robes should be made of linen, preferably lined with silk.
The Temple. I realize not everybody is able to have a dedicated room for magic, but it would be preferred. Your magical tools should at least be in their own drawer, kept away from normal view. Most of these older magic books recommend that the drawer can be locked as well.
The Magic Circle. If you have a temple, you should already have a circle. There are many examples in these older magic books. Here are some examples from those, as well as the Thelemic circle:
(Scan and include).
A Desk and Chair. You’ll need somewhere to work in your temple/circle.
Crafting Utensils. Pen/Pencil (of various colors), paper (fresh linen parchment cardstock), compass, ruler, engraver, metal sheets, scissors, etc...
Preparations:
Things that should be done and prepared before starting the actual ritual/craft.
Step 1:
Create Holy Water. You will use this Holy Water to purify all things in this working, including yourself, your Temple, Desk, Chair, Incense, Pen/Pencil, Paper, etc...
In the day and hour of Mercury (Wednesday, at sunrise or the 8th hour of the day), first bless your salt (ideally sea-salt) with this prayer:
Then take water (ideally from a natural spring) and the salt and pour the salt into the water, saying:
Then recite this prayer over the water:
Step 2:
(Potentially Optional): Make an Asperser (Holy Water sprinkler). You will use this tool to sprinkle Holy Water. (You can easily just use your hands for this.)
In the same day, (that Wednesday), make a bundle of Vervain, Periwinkle, Sage, Mint, Valerian, Fennel, Basil and Rosemary. Bind all together with thread, and put it into a handle of virgin Hazel wood. On the handle, engrave these characters:
(Draw and scan them)
La Veritable Magie Noir notes, “Then you will be able to use it whenever you wish to operate, and know that wherever you sprinkle this water, all phantoms will disappear, so that they will be unable to obstruct. you will be able to use this water in all preparations, and it is proper for everything in the Clavicle.” (pg. 56).
Silby/Hockley’s version says you only need a “little green stick”, ideally with a “small sprinkler of horsehair from a young white colt” on the end. (pg. 336)
Step 3:
Create a holy cloth to wrap all of your instruments. It should be silk taffeta. Silby/Hockley’s key says to have it be white, but the La Veritable Magie Noir says it should be any color but black or brown. This cloth will be used to wrap up all of your instruments after they’ve been purified with Holy Water and consecrated with Holy Incense. Before purifying and consecrating however, write these symbols on the cloth:
(Draw and scan)
Then write these names: Adonai (אדמי), Ammastius, Anareton (Αναρετον?), Cosbos (כוסבוס?), Eloym (אלהים). And recite these Psalms: KVJ 8, KVJ 72, KJV 134, KJV 65. (Or some Thelemic Holy Texts.)
Step 4:
Purify Incense. Use the Asperser to sprinkle Holy Water on your incense, reciting:
Once that’s done wrap your incense in your silk cloth and keep it until needed.
It is ideal if you have specific incense for each planet, as most of these Pentacles are planet-specific. In Liber 777, the planetary incenses are:
— Luna: Camphor, Aloes
— Mercury: Mastic, White Sandal, Mace (Nutmeg seed), Storax (Liquidambar, not Benzoin Styrax)
— Venus: Sandalwood, Myrtle
— Mars: Pepper, Dragon’s Blood
— Jupiter: Saffron
— Saturn: Asafoetida, Scammony
The incenses from the Silby/Hockley manuscript are:
— Luna: Aloes
— Mercury: Mastic
— Venus: Amber
— Mars: Pepper
— Jupiter: Mace
— Saturn: Sulphur
You can purify all your incense at once if you’d like, that way you’re good to go anytime with any planet.
Step 5:
Purify and Consecrate writing/etching utensils and paper/metal plates. These will also be wrapped up in the silk. While purifying, recite this:
The Ritual/Operation
Notes:
Depending on what Pentacle you will be making, you’ll want to align it with the Planetary Day and Hour associated with that Pentacle. There are also certain lunar positions that are more aligned with the attributions of the Pentacle. The Sibly/Hockley manuscript says:
Magic always works better when the moon is waxing (going from crescent to full).
Planetary Days are as follows:
Monday — The Moon
Tuesday — Mars
Wednesday — Mercury
Thursday — Jupiter
Friday — Venus
Saturday — Saturn
Planetary Hours are not 60 minutes except at the Equinoxes. To calculate planetary hours, take the time between sunrise and sunset and divide it by 12. That is the length of one planetary hour. Then, the first “hour” of sunrise is the hour associated with the Day. There are plenty of phone apps that calculate this for you. I personally use Planetaro and it works great.
It’s best to have all of the outlined preparation done before you start the operation so that you have enough time within the Planetary Hour to accomplish everything. You’ll also have more time if doing the operation during the summer.
Step 1:
Shower, and while showering, recite this:
Next, put on your robe while reciting this:
Step 2:
Purify temple by sprinkling Holy Water in each quarter, starting with the “East” (Boleskine,) while saying:
Then sprinkle Holy Water on yourself, saying:
Step 3:
Consecrate temple by drawing crosses with incense in each quarter while saying:
Then consecrate yourself by drawing a cross over yourself while saying:
Then light a candle while saying:
